Allergies are the most common reason that dogs and cats are referred to a dermatology specialist. Atopy (environmental allergies) usually starts between 1 and 3 years of age. Initially, the disease may be mild and seasonal, but each year the symptoms worsen and continue longer. Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and all terrier breeds are especially predisposed, but any breed (including mixed-breed dogs) can be affected. Typical signs include chronic ear infections, foot licking or chewing, face rubbing, licking or scratching under the arms or in the groin, and generalized itchiness. Cats often groom excessively. Eventually, self-trauma results in redness, rashes, sores and hair loss.
Cortisone or other steroids can control the symptoms, but are not recommended due to long term side-effects. Atopy is best treated by an experienced dermatology specialist, who will do allergy testing and make up an individualized serum for hyposensitization. The response is gradual, but most cases improve dramatically without drug side-effects. |
